IPCP's Summer Camp 2010 Nature in the City; Exploring the Elements
This weekend, April 17 and 18, we anticipate another beautiful weekend and large crowds. In fact, the Conservancy has over 250 volunteers from Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Georgia Power Company and Stanley Beaman & Sears gathering in the park to help with various maintenance projects. You may also be aware that Freaknik promoters have decided to bring their event to Atlanta this weekend. We are encouraged by the fact that their spokesperson has indicated that this will be a responsible and positive event for the area. No Freaknik events are being promoted for Grant Park. The Atlanta Police Department will be monitoring all updates and will respond accordingly if there is any “last minute” plans that impact traffic, public safety, or public spaces.
In its efforts to improve Grant Park for all users, the Grant Park Conservancy would like your input via a survey ...

GPCP Alum Merry Preiditsch writes: I'm sending this note out in hope you have a minute to read this very important petition, and sign if you support it. We adopted Cole from Guatemala four years ago and have been blessed ever since. A change in the adoption laws a few years ago resulted in hunderds of cases to be stalled - and the children have to remain in temporary housing while their cases continue to spin through the court system. (The new law aims to prevent horrible things that were happening to pregnant women there for traffickers who would then sell the babies, often killing and torturing the mothers.)

Last week, early Wednesday morning, my shop, "Pin Up Girl! Cosmetics", had a large brick thrown through the front left window. Nothing was stolen. Then yesterday about 10am, a client of mine told me her house on Boulevard SE had the front door kicked in. Some vintage jewelry was stolen, a Nikon D60 camera and an organic apple. Items were moved around and searched through. But that was all that was taken.

Can you help the Grant Park Cooperative Preschool locate the stolen mud monster mosaic statue? The Grant Park Cooperative Preschool's "Down Earth, Up Sky/Mud Monster" mosaic sculpture was stolen in March 2009. If you have noticed this 8' tall, 200+ pound sculpture in the courtyard in front of the preschool - someone, or several someones, liked it enough to drive away with it. We would very much like to have it back as it was a two-year-long project at the school. View Details about the sculpture.

If you have any information or see the sculpture please contact the school at (404) 521-0440 or grantpark@gpcp.org.

Atlanta’s passenger rail future is taking shape. A joint statement was signed Friday, March 6, 2009, by GDOT and Amtrak that will preserves the 4 mile Decatur Belt segment for light-rail rather than a high-speed Amtrak route (AJC). This agreement also mentions adding a north-south Amtrak platform. Writes one participant, "I am excited by what I saw and heard today, not only for the BeltLine, but other rail transit projects critically important to the region’s healthy growth."
